Las Vegas, VN – September 12, 2023 – Latimer Controls, developers of utility-scale solar control software, was announced as a winner of the American-Made Solar Prize Round 6 at RE+. Latimer Controls was one of two winners among 10 competing finalists at the Go! Demo Day. The team took home a cash prize of $500,000 and a $75,000 voucher that will continue to fund collaborative research at NREL with Dr. Jing Wang and Dr. Mengmeng Cai.
Latimer Controls's solution aims to transform stand-alone utility-scale solar plants into flexible and dispatchable assets on the grid. Utilizing advanced machine learning, the software utilizes high time-resolution controls that provide grid operators the ability to maintain stable power levels and ramp rates under dynamic weather conditions, while also forecasting real-time available headroom for curtailed solar operations.
The American-Made Solar Prize is a multi-million-dollar prize competition designed to energize U.S. solar manufacturing through a series of contests and the development of a diverse and powerful support network that leverages national laboratories, energy incubators, and other resources across the country. The competition enables the rapid development of innovative solar solutions by providing resources and support to entrepreneurs as they transform concepts into early-stage prototypes ready for industry testing.
